US technology giant Apple has lost a
lawsuit against a Chinese state regulator over
patent rights to voice recognition software such
as the iPhone’s “Siri”, a Beijing court said.
The legal battle begun in 2012 when Shanghai-
based Zhizhen Network Technology pursued
Apple for allegedly infringing its Chinese patent
with Siri, its “intelligent personal assistant”.
Apple asked China’s patent review board, which
operates under the State Intellectual Property
Office, to declare Zhizhen’s original patent
ineffective but the request was rejected.
Late last year, Apple appealed to Beijing’s Number
One Intermediate People’s Court to overturn that
“The court did not support the cause of action
stated by Apple,” the court said in a statement on
Tuesday, referring to the case in which Apple
“brought a lawsuit” against the government
“The patent for the invention of the ‘type of
chatbot system’ involved remains effective,” the
court said, referring to Zhizhen’s patent.
Apple had decided to appeal to the Beijing Higher
People’s Court, it added.
Apple’s Siri, which responds to a user’s
commands through voice recognition software,
made its formal debut with the release of the
iPhone 4S in 2011, while Zhizhen claims its earlier
“Xiao i Robot” product works in a similar way.
It is not the first time that Apple has been
embroiled in intellectual property right
infringement and controversy in China, where its
products are popular.
Apple in 2012 paid $60 million to settle a
separate legal dispute with a Chinese firm over
the iPad trademark.
rare, breast cancer does occur in men and is
often diagnosed at a later age and stage than in
women, experts say.
Each year in the United States, about 2,000
cases of male breast cancer are diagnosed and
about 500 men die from the disease. It can strike
at any age, but is most often diagnosed among
men at ages 60 to 70, which is five to 10 years
later than in women.
Breast cancer in men is typically diagnosed at a
later age and stage than in women because men
don’t believe they’re at risk for the disease, said
Dr. Tatiana Prowell, a medical oncologist and
breast cancer scientific lead at the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration’s office of hematology and
“You’d think that because men have smaller
breasts they would notice a lump instantly. But
men don’t expect a breast lump to be cancer,
whereas most women who feel a breast lump
immediately assume the worst,” she said in an
FDA news release.
Because breast cancer in men accounts for only 1
percent of all breast cancer cases, there is little
research into treatments for men with the
“We tend to treat men the same way we treat
women,” Prowell said.
“Men have historically been excluded from breast
cancer trials,” she added. “We are actively
encouraging drug companies to include men in
all breast cancer trials unless there is a valid
scientific reason not to. The number of men in
breast cancer trials will still be small because male
breast cancer is a rare condition, but any
information to help men facing this disease is
better than none.”
Most men with breast cancer have painless lumps
that can be detected by touch, but the disease
usually isn’t diagnosed until they develop
soreness, she said.

Optimus Prime and Grimlock – one of the Dinobots
making their debut in the movie – prepare for
battle in “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction”.
It took just 12 days for the Hollywood
blockbuster film “Transformers 4: Age of
Extinction” to dethrone sci-fi action film “Avatar”
and become the top-grossing film to date in
China, reported Chinese media.
Helmed by US director Michael Bay,
“Transformers 4” has raked in about 1.4 billion
yuan (S$280.7 million) since it opened in Chinese
cinemas on June 27, surpassing the 1.37 billion
yuan (S$274.7 million) “Avatar” took in since it
first opened in China some four years ago in
The box office receipts for “Transformers 4” in
China are expected to hit 2 billion yuan (S$401.1
million) in the following weeks.
“Transformers 4” director Michael Bay has been
criticised by some Chinese netizens for his lack of
creativity and for re-hashing old ideas in
They have even given him an unflattering,
phonetically-similar Chinese nickname, which can
be roughly translated as “Selling Copies”.
So just how did “Transformers 4” become such a
Some Chinese film industry observers believe
there is more to this than meets the eye.
They are convinced that the rapid increase in the
number of cinema screens in China to meet
growing demand in the country had made it
possible for “Transformers 4” to quickly overtake
“Avatar”, by making the film more accessible to
its Chinese audience.
“Transformers 4” opened on about 20,000
cinema screens in China. “Avatar”, in contrast,
only opened on about 5,000 screens.
Others believed that the production team’s
decision to feature familiar Chinese stars like Li
Bing Bing and Han Geng, as well as setting parts
of the film in China, had paid off and allowed it to
attract Chinese cinema-goers in droves.

team’s 2014 World Cup semi-finals against
Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari
said his side’s stunning 7-1 thrashing at the
hands of Germany in their World Cup semi-final
on Tuesday had been the worst day of his life.
“I think it was the worst day of my life, but life
goes on,” said the 65-year-old.
“I will be remembered as the coach to lose 7-1
but I knew that risk when I took the job and life
goes on so that is what I am going to do.”
Brazil were swept aside by a stunning start from
the Germans as goals from Thomas Mueller,
Miroslav Klose, Sami Khedira and two from Toni
Kroos put them 5-0 in front inside the opening
Andre Schuerrle added two more goals for the
Germans after half-time before Oscar’s late
consolation for the hosts.
“My message for the Brazilian people and fans is
that we did what we could do and we did what
we think was our best,” added Scolari.
“We lost to a great team with great skill that took
six minutes to change the game with four goals in
an extraordinary manner.
“Please excuse us for this mistake. We are sorry
we could not get to the final and we will honour
the team in the third-place playoff in Brasilia on
Scolari accepted responsibility for the defeat, but
gave no indication as to whether he intended to
stay on as Brazil coach after the tournament.
“Who is the one responsible? I am. This
catastrophic result can be shared with the whole
group because that is what my players say and
want, but I am the one who chooses the tactics,
the line-up, so the person responsible for the
result is me.”
